Small and medium businesses across Canada have been working on getting noticed online in much higher numbers since the pandemic hit. Think with Google has some lovely stories of businesses that have thrived after pivoting to online sales.
But you don’t need to actually sell things online to need Google. According to Statista, over 90% of Canadians use Google to find things. This includes everything from a quick search for a business’ location to general searches for services like repairs, health services, and restaurants near them.

When anyone does a search on Google, they’ll see two different types of results on the page. The top ones are paid ads. In the sample below, I’ve highlighted those paid ads and the regular search results that show below them.
If you want your business to show up on Google searches right away (well, within a few hours of set-up), Google Ads is the way to go. You’ll be on page one of search results. Once you’re set up with Google Ads, Google will charge you for every time someone clicks on the link and goes to your site. (It doesn’t charge for ‘impressions’—the number of views your site receives.)

Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
SEO is the other way to have your site show up when someone does a Google search. It’s a much more involved process than setting up ads. It takes time, strategy, and resources. But when all the work pays off, your site will begin to show up organically. This makes the Google algorithm happy!
The closer your site gets to that top page spot (the best is right below the map), and the more often searchers click on it, the more Google will choose to show your site. It’s a virtuous cycle, but it can take 3-12 months to really see results.
There are two parts to SEO services: onsite optimization and offsite optimization.
The onsite optimization includes actions done on your site. Things like:
- Writing relevant copy to the keywords people use to search for your type of business
- Creating services pages for those keywords
- Naming all the pages of your website with those keywords
The offsite optimization includes:
- Putting links on other sites that direct visitors to your site
- Setting up your Google Business Profile
- Social media posts with links to your site.
All the above tasks essentially create “points” within Google’s algorithm and the site with the most points gets the top spot (that’s a bit of an oversimplification, but it’s generally how it works). These spots are earned over time. There’s no ad budget required like Google Ads—just the time and effort of the people doing the tasks.
Ranking on Google’s page 1 organically depends on competition. For example, the keyword ‘Upholstery’ probably ranks on the lower end of this so maybe 4 months depending how much work is done per month. Lawyers, Realtors, and Dentists are the most competitive for this ranking.
It’s entirely up to you which process you use. If you’re able, we find that a combination of the two is best. Google Ads get your business visible quickly. SEO helps you create a targeted, user-friendly website with the content people are looking for. It will give you a website that Google likes (very important) and will grow your exposure and traffic over time.
