What is Google Analytics?

Put simply, Google Analytics is a way to track traffic on your website. By using it for your blog or website, you’ll be able to answer questions like:

  • How many visitors do I get to my site?
  • Where are they from?
  • What content do they find most interesting?
  • Which of my marketing tactics sends people to my site?
  • What other websites am I getting traffic from?

Those are just the tip of the iceberg. With Google Analytics you get a complete view of everything you need to know about your site’s visitors.

How Can Google Analytics Help Me?

This big picture view allows you to collect and analyze data from your online ads to see which are most effective and expand those marketing campaigns. Let’s say you own a website that sells pens and you’re advertising with Facebook and Google. Using digital analytics you could see that you (hypothetically) have a high sales success rate from customers using Facebook in one region but in another, Google ads work better. Knowing this, you can tailor your online ads for these markets and use your marketing budget more wisely.

Google Analytics can also help you find parts of your website that drive potential customers away. Using the same example from above, digital analytics may reveal that there’s a part of the checkout process where visitors leave before finalizing their purchase. That may mean the process is too complicated or that there’s a flaw on the checkout page that interrupts sales. Knowing this, you can fix or simplify things so the process is smoother for customers.

Even if you’re not selling anything, Google Analytics will benefit you. Bloggers and publishers can use these reports to create a loyal following, learn the best time to engage with them, and design more focussed online and affiliate advertising.
